With a convection fireplace insert, a heating solution can be implemented where the central heating of the house is provided by delivering warm air to every room via air ducts.

What is a convection fireplace insert?

Convection fireplace inserts offer one of the most popular and efficient solutions of modern heating technology for your home. Made of steel or cast iron, these closed-firebox appliances not only provide the atmosphere of traditional open fireplaces, but also significantly increase heating efficiency while making operation safer.

A convection fireplace insert is the combination of an air-heating fireplace insert and an attached outer sheet metal jacket. The outer sheet metal jacket, also known as a convection casing, collects the warm air generated by the fireplace insert and directs it into the connected air ducts, from where the warmth can be further distributed using fans.

Operating principle of a convection fireplace insert

The essence of how a convection fireplace insert works is based on air circulation. There is an air gap between the firebox casing and the outer casing. Cold air flows into this gap from below, warms up upon contact with the hot surface of the firebox, and the warm, lighter air flows upward due to gravity. Through the top, front, or side air grilles, the warm air enters the room, spreading heat quickly and evenly. This process is called convection.

Main features and advantages of a convection fireplace insert

  • High efficiency: While the efficiency of traditional open fireplaces is only around 10–20%, a modern convection fireplace insert can reach an efficiency of 70–85%. This means that most of the generated heat is utilized, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced heating costs.
  • Modern combustion control: Most models feature a built-in air intake system that allows precise control of the fire’s intensity. Primary, secondary, and tertiary air intakes optimize the combustion process, reduce emissions, and keep the glass clean (so-called “air wash”).
  • Safety: Thanks to the closed firebox, there is no risk of flying sparks, making its use much safer than that of an open fireplace.
  • Aesthetics and design: Available in various shapes and styles. We manufacture them with both modern and rustic front panels for our fireboxes.
  • With a thermostat placed in the convection casing, the starting temperature of the exhaust fans can be defined.
  • The secondary sheet metal casing does not increase performance; it merely allows the generated heat energy to be transported away.
  • An additional heat exchanger, e.g., a heat exchanger flue pipe or baffle pass, can be attached to its flue outlet.
  • Recommended for buildings where establishing a water-side heating circuit is not feasible due to various reasons.
