Our Story

Benkel Kft., a specialist in the manufacturing and distribution of fireplace inserts, is a second-generation, family-owned Hungarian enterprise. The foundations of the company were laid in 1983 by my father, Csaba Gyergyay, also an M.Sc. Mechanical Engineer. After thirty years of successful work, he passed the torch to me in 2013. Since then, I have led the company as managing director and owner, while still relying on his extensive experience and advice.

Before founding his fireplace manufacturing business, my father worked as a mechanical engineer at the Ganz Machinery Factory and later started an individual metalworking business. The workshop grew rapidly; within seven years, the initial staff of three grew to twenty, and the product range expanded accordingly.

The production of fireboxes and other fireplace accessories—which remains a dominant part of our portfolio—began in the early 1990s. Successful mass production was preceded by rigorous preparation: first, comprehensive testing of prototypes to meet all relevant regulations, followed by the development of production technology. From the beginning, it was a priority that our fireplace inserts compete in quality with the most popular foreign brands marketed in Hungary.

When I took over the company in 2013—with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and five years of work experience—we opened up toward the latest heating technology innovations, modernized the appearance of our fireboxes, and further diversified our product range. We developed custom-made fireboxes and mountable heat recovery units, and expanded our selection of water-jacket fireplaces by optimizing the ratio between air-heating and water-side performance. These innovations allow us to offer the ideal fireplace for properties of almost any size or energy requirement.

It is heartening for our business and the profession as a whole that fireplaces are currently experiencing a renaissance. Today, these heating appliances have reclaimed their rightful place in Hungary—not just symbolically, but in a very real sense. While fireplaces and tile stoves were once viewed as “capitalist relics” before the 1990s, today there is a growing demand from builders and architects to bring the living element of nature back into the home: a fire that provides warmth and intimacy.

However, the past decade has brought immense challenges to the field of combustion technology. Reducing particulate matter emissions, mitigating air pollution, adopting eco-friendly perspectives, and meeting higher efficiency standards require continuous development and innovation. EU norms now dictate the directives we must meet, while our built environment also changes. Building insulation, the prevalence of ventilation systems, and the integration of smart devices with home technical equipment necessitate a mandatory renewal of heating technology. Furthermore, evolving aesthetic values and public taste also drive progress; while these changes don’t happen overnight, the trends are clearly visible.

As a result of technical and technological progress, the methods for achieving “scenic heating” are constantly expanding. There is a wide variety of building and decorative materials, as well as glass-door closed fireboxes. However, form, functionality, and quality—the final product—depend on the creativity and professional skills of the stove and fireplace builders. Although masters strive to meet every demand, satisfying customer wishes while maintaining feasibility is one of the profession’s greatest challenges. This justifies constant theoretical preparation, the expansion of knowledge, and the exchange of experiences.

It has been said many times: it is in the interest of both manufacturers and users that the domestic industry remains standing in the global market. However, we, the dedicated representatives of this craft, must create the conditions for our own survival. Today and in the future, the most important factors are knowledge-based professionalism, thorough and multifaceted information, and the ability to self-manage. At the same time, the past decade has taught tradespeople that a market position is not only hard to acquire but also a great challenge to maintain. Today, when foreign products—sometimes inferior to Hungarian quality—flood the domestic market, it is our common interest to strengthen the acceptance of Hungarian products. We still have much work to do in this regard. Fireplace and stove builders have a responsibility to earn respect for Hungarian goods and recognition from customers through their products and services. This requires a continuous renewal of the profession, which is also the source of our competitiveness.
