Authentic “flekken” means meat grilled over charcoal, traditionally served on a wooden platter and sliced into thin bites with a long, slender knife. Originally it was prepared from the tenderloin of a fattened ox that had been “kept on ice,” particularly from the thin, flap-like section. It can also be made from beef flank, cut into plate-sized slices about one to one-and-a-half fingers thick. Transylvanian Saxons traditionally prepared flekken exclusively from pork, specifically pork neck.
One important preparation tip is not to wash the meat, but simply wipe it clean. Tenderize it just as gently by tapping it with the flat side of a knife, then season with salt and pepper. Place it on a grate over glowing wood embers, stoked as needed, and grill until browned on both sides. Cooking may take four to five minutes on one side and three to four minutes on the other. Naturally, the meat should not be pierced during cooking, as this would allow its juices to escape. You can check whether it is ready by pressing it with the blunt side of a knife.

The weight of the fireplace inserts ranges between 100-200 kg. You do not need to worry about logistics: in addition to delivery, personal collection at our premises (Pilisszentlászló) is also available, and we provide professional loading into your vehicle as part of our service. For transport by passenger car, we carefully shrink-wrap the product; for palletized transport, we prepare it securely strapped.
Any chimney system suitable for solid and wood fuel is adequate, provided its internal diameter meets or exceeds the flue collar diameter of the chosen firebox (160 or 180 mm). Officially, the connection must be carried out by a qualified professional who will issue a contractor’s declaration—based on this, the chimney sweeping authority issues the permit for use.
We continuously keep basic types in stock, but since every customer comes with unique needs, we assemble the fireboxes customized with the chosen options (custom external air connection, design handles, leg structure). If the selected configuration is currently out of stock, the manufacturing time is generally only 1-2 weeks. In urgent cases, this can be shortened through individual consultation.
We offer a 5-year factory warranty on all Benkel fireplace inserts, which can be extended. Our fireboxes are made of massive, thermal shock-resistant cast iron, meaning they are designed for decades of continuous operation. Our very first models, manufactured 35 years ago, still operate flawlessly in Hungarian homes today. All our products have official TÜV certification.
